When Jess rode into Stratton, Texas, he made sure that Black Raven’s blanket covered most of his face. He stopped by the jail and looked inside, but John Bodine wasn’t there. He was about to get off his horse when Bodine came walking out of the Stratton Hotel, carrying a sawed off across his arm.

“Who in the hell are you dragging in that sled?” he asked as took his hat off and smiled at Nancy. He frowned at Thorndike, knowing the man all too well. “And what in the hell are you doing working with this knucklehead?”

“It’s a long story and I’ll explain it all to you after we get him to the doctor,” replied Jess impatiently as he slid out of the saddle. Bodine caught the expression on Jess’s face and he frowned. He bent over and lifted the blanket to see an Apache dressed in Jess’s extra set of clothes and he grunted something unintelligible under his breath before he stood back up.

“Are you out of your damn mind bringing an Apache into town with everything that’s been going on around here lately?”

“Keep your voice down,” whispered Jess. “I need you to help me get him to the doctor’s office and then set up in the Stratton Hotel before anyone finds out about him.” Bodine stood up and shook his head back and forth, rolling his eyes up in the back of his head.

“Alright, but after this, we’re even; agreed?” demanded Bodine.

“Agreed,” replied Jess.

“I don’t know if the doctor will even work on him.”

“Maybe we should take him into the hotel first and then call for the doctor,” suggested Jess.

“Why?”

“The less we move him around the better,” he suggested. “Besides, when the doctor shows up, I’ll make sure he doesn’t leave until he works on him.”

“I think you’ve finally lost your mind,” Bodine carped.

“You gonna help me or not?”

“We’ve got to let Henry know about this.”

“Go and get him and tell him what I need,” he said. “Thorndike, go to the doctor’s office and ask for a stretcher, but don’t tell him who it’s for.”

“I figured my job was finished now that we’re in Stratton and Nancy is alive and well,” he groused.

“Just do it,” ordered Jess. “Tomorrow morning, I’ll pay you the other five hundred and you can go on your way.”

“Alright, but this is the last thing. Especially where it concerns him.” he grumbled while nodding toward Raven.

Henry Stratton came walking across the street with Bodine. Henry gave Jess a worrisome look when he asked, “Is that really an Apache under that blanket?”

“Actually, he’s a half-breed; half white and half Apache,” submitted Jess awkwardly, as if it might make it sound better.

“And you really want to bring him into my hotel?”

“Yeah, just long enough for him to heal up,” replied Jess. “I’ll make sure he doesn’t come out of the room or even look out the windows.”

“Jess, this town owes you a huge debt of gratitude for what you’ve done for us, but this is asking
